For someone with a short attention span, it is crazy-wild that I can stare at a lamp in a thrift store for half an hour, trying to convince myself to leave it, and, simultaneously, also, why I need it.
Hi. My name is Katrina and I am a never-recovering thrifter.
I love to frequent thrift stores, resale sites, garage sales, flea markets, and the like for several elaborate reasons.
1. THE VALUE. There are many necessities available on the thrift circuit, and we do not always need to have the newest version of them, so why pay out the nose for newer (and honestly most of the time worse versions of these) needs and luxuries? Old things come from the before-time when companies had not yet discovered planned obsolescence. A magical time, full of wonder and quality.
2. THE MYSTERY. The thrill of the thrift is no joke. It’s exciting to discover and rescue things that once were loved and now discarded. As someone with a wildfire in place of an idea center inside my brain it is great to have externally controlled parameters around my making. That is not to say I will not ever seek out supplies on purpose, but it is an excellent starting point to only have the items found in this way as my inspiration for creation.
3. THE ENVIRONMENTAL-NESS/COMMUNITY-CARE OF IT ALL. The phrase Reduce, Reuse, Recycle are in that order for a reason. It is the most efficiently effective way to fight what is happening to our beautiful planet from our cute little neighborhoods to the whole of the earth, all the way out to the ozone. Reduce your consumption of things in general, reuse things that you already have or someone no longer needs, and recycle things that have truly reached the end of their life cycle so that they may become raw material again. The thrifts we find reduce what is being produced and shipped across the world, The money spent goes towards the community in some way, and these items get diverted from landfills - which, as you may know, hurt the surrounding community as they grow.
There's more reasons than not to buy second hand!
